What to Expect
What should I wear to First Church?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable, you will be accepted here no matter what you are wearing. You will see people dressed in their “Sunday best,” while others are wearing blue jeans. "Mortals look on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7)
What can I expect worship to be like?
Each service lasts approximately one hour and each service has a unique feel.
Beginnings, which meets at 8:30am in the Chapel, is a traditional service of Word and Table. Each week there is a sermon, beautiful music, and communion.
The Sanctuary is our traditional service that meets at 11:00am. The service follows a set liturgy made up of congregational hymn singing, Scripture readings, choral and organ music, prayer, and a sermon.
The Loft is a modern worship service that also meets at 11:00am. The service does not follow a set liturgy rather it incorporates more modern worship songs with a band, a sermon, time for prayer, and the use of video and projected images to enhance the worship experience.
What do you have for my children during worship?
During worship, all children are invited to attend and participate in the various worship services with their parents. We believe that the presence of children in worship is an important part of the community of faith in addition to bringing joy and life to worship. There are children’s packets available in all of our worship spaces. On Sunday mornings there is also a nursery, available from 8:15am-12:15pm for children ages 6 weeks through Kindergarten, that can be found in the Education Building across from the Welcome Center.
And for Youth?
We have a dynamic youth group! Collision Student Ministry meets on Sunday mornings for Sunday School at 9:30am in the Basement of the Sanctuary Building. In addition, the youth group gathers for Sunday evenings, Bible Studies, Mission Trips, Weekend Retreats, and a variety of other fun events throughout the year.
What are the people like?
As a downtown church, we are a diverse representation of our urban setting. People come to First Church from all different parts of Birmingham and the surrounding areas—from as close as lofts in downtown to areas as far away as Sylacauga. We are made up of people of all ages and life-stages, black and white, people of all socio-economic levels, families and single individuals—we are constantly striving to be a reflection of the Kingdom of God!
What if I’m not United Methodist? Should I still come?
Yes! First Church is made up of people from a variety of denominational backgrounds. If you would like more information about what it means to be a United Methodist click HERE, but know that it is not a requirement to be United Methodist to join us in worship and fellowship. Everyone is invited to participate fully in this community of faith.
What if I’m liberal/conservative/etc.? Should I come to First Church?
Yes! As a diverse congregation, we also represent a wide spectrum of beliefs from liberal to conservative and anything in between. We don’t always agree about everything but we believe that it is important to be in community together and to learn from one another. We are a richer community of faith because of our differences.
