The Student Ministry at First Church is a blended group comprised of students in grades 6-12. Students come from over 30 different schools to make up our youth group.

Our students use this diversity as an asset
by creating a group that is open and welcoming to all.

Throughout the school year students meet every Wednesday evening for Bible study and Sunday evening for fellowship. In addition, students participate in several retreats throughout the year. Two of the most important events are Discovery Weekend and Confirmation Retreat. Discovery Weekend is a weekend retreat held at First Church in March during which junior high students are placed in a position of importance as the senior high students lead and facilitate the entire weekend. Confirmation Retreat is a weekend retreat at Camp Sumatanga in May and is for our 6th grade students.

The Student Ministry consistently has very busy summers. Each summer there is a mission trip, a week in which students serve the Birmingham community, a trip to Atlanta for Six Flags and a Braves game, and a week-long summer retreat. Many students choose to be involved in our foreign mission trip to Panama.

The goal of Collision Student Ministries is to welcome each and every student in a way that they feel accepted and included. In doing this, students are able to love God, love their neighbor, and love themselves. The hope is that students can actively participate in the Kingdom of God here on earth.

First Church is a Safe Sanctuary Church

Because we believe that Jesus taught us to care especially for all children and youth, First Church, as part of the United Methodist Church Safe Sanctuaries program, is committed to the practice of safe supervision. Our Safe Sanctuary policy sets standards for the supervision of First Church children, youth, and vulnerable adults in our care. Thus, in covenant with all United Methodist congregations, we have adopted detailed policies for the prevention of neglect and abuse.

As a Christian community of faith, we at First Church pledge to conduct the ministry of the gospel in ways that assure the safety and spiritual growth of all children, youth, and vulnerable adults and those who minister to them.
