Extending Our Welcome
We are a community in progress, grounding ourselves in the idea that all people belong, are welcomed, valued, and able to participate fully in all aspects of church life.
First Church strives to be “An Open Place for All.” We are a community in progress, grounding ourselves in the idea that all people belong, are welcomed, valued, and able to participate fully in all aspects of church life.
We recognize that people experience our spaces, programs, and services in different ways. Physical, communication-based, sensory, or procedural barriers can unintentionally limit full participation. We are committed to listening, learning, and making every effort to improve access and inclusion within our congregation.
Below, you will find a list of our accessibility options at First Church. However, if you need an accommodation that is not listed, or you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Accessibility Coordinator or our Associate Pastor.

Parking & Navigation
We have accessible parking in our back parking lot for anyone who may require a closer parking space. We also have an elevator in the Education Building that will take you up to the Loft for worship, as well as an elevator in our Sanctuary Building to take you up to the main floor.
Accessible Seating
In our Sanctuary there are pews for those using mobility aids. These pews are located toward the front left as you enter the Sanctuary and are designed in such a way that a mobility aid can easily sit in front of you. If you need help locating these seats, ask one of our Welcome Guides who would be happy to help!
Assistive Listening Devices
In the Sanctuary, we offer assistive listening devices. If you would like one of these devices, please reach out to our Accessibility Coordinator (jcaine1996@gmail.com) or our Associate Pastor (rea@firstchurchbhm.com) prior to the Sunday you wish to attend, or locate one of our Welcome Guides prior to the service and they will be happy to help you set that up.
Blind/Low Vision Support
We have a variety of accommodations for those who are blind or have low vision. We have large print bulletins readily available in the Sanctuary, as well as a screen reader friendly bulletin published on our website under the Worship tab. All of our Welcome Guides are trained in sighted guide, so if you need assistance navigating our space, please feel free to ask for that. If you have any questions about specific accommodations, please reach out to our Accessibility Coordinator or our Associate Pastor.
Service Animals
At First Church, we respect and welcome service animals. If you have a service animal and wish to bring them to church activities, please do not hesitate to do so. Service animals are already a part of our worshipping community! We have a courtyard where the animal will be able to use the bathroom, as well as a trash can easily available when needed.
Please note that there will be no in person or virtual worship services on Sunday, February 15 due to our churchwide retreat.
