Mary Magdalene Study

This fall we are launching a new opportunity to participate in short term small groups on Sunday mornings. The first will be a study of Mary Magdalene led by Jay Jessee for 3 weeks beginning Sunday, September 13 at 9:45am in the Carolyn Pitts Classroom (basement level of the Education Building at the end of the hall). Together we will consider the following questions as we consider one of the most important and yet misunderstood figures in the Bible: Who was Mary Magdalene? Why is she so often left out of discussions of Jesus’s main disciples? What does knowing more about her do to our understanding of the Gospel and to our understanding of our own relationship to the Christ? This small group will look at Mary Magdalene’s presence in the Gospels as well as some non-canonical texts as a means of trying to better understand her importance to early Christianity. Having better answers to questions about Mary Magdalene, Cynthia Bourgeault argues, invites us to rebuild our trust in the ministry of love that is core to becoming more “fully human.”
