EARLY LEARNING CENTER

Raising the Next Generation

The Early Learning Center of First Church Birmingham recognizes that your child is a unique individual who deserves special care.

Our focus is to offer a developmentally appropriate curriculum , The Creative Curriculum, and stimulating learning environment for your child.

In 1989 First Church Birmingham opened the Early Learning Center. The Center cares for children from infancy through five years old. In order to insure that the highest quality of care would always be offered, the Early Learning Center (or ELC) voluntarily applied for accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). After the ELC was visited by trained NAEYC assessors, a national commission composed of recognized experts in childcare and early childhood education reviewed the center’s self-study and the parent’s evaluation . The Center was judged to be in substantial compliance with the Academy’s Criteria and in 1991 was granted accreditation – one of the few child care centers in the state to be so accredited.

The ELC has space for 55 students whose care is provided by 16 teachers, aides, and support staff. The strictest criteria for child care and child safety are applied. These children become family to the ELC staff and are loved and cared for accordingly.

Our teachers are equipped with Bachelor or Associate degrees in Child Development or Early Childhood Education. They are trained to guide the experience of each child in a positive way according to the child’s level of development. The curriculum is based on the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the children, and encourages them to participate in the different aspects of the daily program.

We believe that parental involvement is crucial in maintaining a high quality program:

1. We encourage parents to be active in their child’s daily routine.

2. We provide parents with regular opportunities for communication with their child’s teacher.

3. We welcome parents’ comments and suggestions for improving the program.

4. We invite parents to attend seminars on a wide range of topics that concern children.
